  The one task people forget is the neighbours. A message the day before costs nothing and buys you an evening without a knock at the door.

• a birthday party

  The cake is the only item with a real deadline you do not control. This checklist puts the order three days out and the candles on the day, so neither depends on you remembering on the morning.

• a sangeet

  The dance and song list sits twelve days out — earlier than anything else on this list. Every rehearsal depends on it, so it is the one decision that blocks other people rather than only you.

• an office party

  The venue sits fourteen days out, the earliest task on any of these lists. Nothing else can be finalised until the place and date are held.

  Two tasks exist only here: the activities, six days out, and the return gifts, four. Both are easy to leave until the last day and both are miserable to arrange then.
